Course Requirements & What to Bring

To ensure a smooth training day and successful qualification, students attending the Maryland Wear & Carry Renewal Course should come prepared.

Required:

  • A valid Maryland Wear & Carry Permit (not expired beyond renewal window)

  • A reliable handgun in safe working condition

  • At least 50 rounds of ammunition

  • Eye and ear protection

  • Government-issued photo ID

Recommended:

  • Holster and magazine pouch (if applicable)

  • Extra magazine or speed loader

  • Note-taking materials

  • Appropriate range clothing (closed-toe shoes, no low-cut tops)

Important Safety Notice:

Live ammunition is NOT permitted in the classroom portion of training. All firearms must be unloaded and properly secured when entering the classroom. Ammunition should remain stored separately until range time.

Ammo is not provided for the course; however, 9mm and .22LR ammunition are available for purchase if needed.

Live-Fire Qualification Details

As part of the Maryland Wear & Carry Permit Renewal Course, students must complete a live-fire qualification to demonstrate safe firearm handling and basic marksmanship proficiency.

The qualification follows Maryland State Police Basic Practical Handgun Course (BPHC) standards and is fired on a B-27 silhouette target.

Qualification Course of Fire

Total rounds: 25 rounds
Target: B-27 silhouette
Passing standard: Minimum 70% accuracy (18 out of 25 rounds)

3 yards – 5 rounds (two-handed)

  • Fired as single rounds, focusing on safe handling and control

5 yards – 10 rounds (two-handed)

  • Fired in controlled strings

  • Includes reload procedures and maintaining accuracy under time constraints

7 yards – 5 rounds (two-handed)

  • Controlled strings emphasizing consistency and safe firearm operation

15 yards – 5 rounds (two-handed)

  • Fired as single rounds with emphasis on accuracy and stability

Scoring

Rounds are scored on the B-27 silhouette target, and students must meet the minimum 70% passing requirement. Safe firearm handling, muzzle discipline, and compliance with range commands are required at all times.

Students who successfully complete the qualification will receive the instructor-signed documentation required for their Maryland Wear & Carry renewal application.

How to Renew Your Maryland Wear & Carry Permit

Renewing your Maryland Wear & Carry Permit is a straightforward process once your training is complete. Follow these steps to stay compliant with Maryland State Police requirements.

Step 1 — Complete Your Renewal Training

Attend and successfully complete the required 8-hour Maryland Wear & Carry Renewal Course, including the live-fire qualification.

Step 2 — Log Into the Maryland State Police Licensing Portal

Go to the Maryland State Police electronic licensing system and log into your existing account.
