What is a Firearm Transfer?
A firearm transfer occurs when you purchase a firearm from an out-of-state seller or online retailer and have it shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) like Chesapeake Gunslingers. We receive the firearm on your behalf, complete the necessary background checks, and handle the legal paperwork before transferring the firearm to you.
Maryland Firearm Transfer Requirements
In Maryland, specific regulations apply to the transfer and purchase of firearms:
Handgun Qualification License (HQL): Maryland law requires that you possess an HQL for the purchase of all regulated firearms, including handguns, AR pistols, and certain small-frame shotguns like the Mossberg Shockwave.
7-Day Holding Period: For regulated firearms, there is a mandatory 7-day waiting period after which the Maryland State Police will issue a "Not Disapproved" status, allowing you to take possession of the firearm.
Same-Day Pickup for Long Guns: Long guns, such as rifles and shotguns that do not fall under regulated categories, are eligible for same-day pickup once the background check is completed.
Background Check Requirement: All individuals must be able to pass a federal background check in order to complete the firearm transfer process.
Compliance Responsibility: It is the purchaser’s responsibility to ensure that the firearm they are buying is compliant with Maryland state laws. Return Policy for Non-Compliant Firearms
If a firearm is found to be non-compliant with Maryland regulations and needs to be returned, there is a $20 administrative fee, plus shipping costs, to return the item to the seller—provided the seller is willing to accept the return.

$40 for regulated firearms (e.g., handguns, AR pistols)
$30 for long guns (e.g., rifles, shotguns)
$100 for NFA items (e.g., suppressors, short-barreled rifles)
